10 Ways to Style Garlands Around the Home by rin+RUCKUS
By now, you have seen our garlands, and I’m sure you have already fallen in love with them. We certainly have. We love them as a classic party decor staple that instantly livens up a space with thematic flair. But what I love even more about them is how versatile they turned out to be. I love that our garlands don’t just sit in the closet when the party is over. We have found so many ways to beautify our home with these garlands, and pop in color to any room on demand. Here are 10 of our favorite ways to use garlands in our everyday decor.
- Over the Fireplace – This is one of the more classic garland locations, and it’s easy to see why. Hearth and home both bring added warmth with a garland draped over top. When we get cozy, we like to look at our favorite colors and immerse ourselves in the hygge.
- On the Banister – Our banister is a pretty cool and modern-looking wrought iron that races across the main living area. But sometimes, I want to do more with the space. When that time comes, we reach for the garlands. Since it is one of the first pieces people see when they enter the home, it immediately greets our guests with a playful color pop.
- On the Headboard – As the name “bedroom” implies, the centerpiece of the room tends to be, well, the bed. Why not adorn the bed with another dimension of decoration and tap into the usually vacant vertical space? Choosing a garland that matches your decorative pillows and/or your sheets is the perfect way to catch the bed with color. Or, if your sheets have the clean while (or otherwise monochromatic) look, the headboard garland can bring just enough color to brighten up the room.
- On the Footboard – Yes, the footboard deserves its own category. It does bring color complements to the sheets and pillows in the same way as the headboard garland. But instead of bringing verticality, it brings depth. It draws the eyes down from the bed’s wall and brings them to the rest of the room, naturally calling attention to the entire set of decor. Not only that, but it does so without the risk of crowding out your decorative pillows, and with less risk of you accidentally knocking them down while sitting in bed.
- On the Curtains – I learned quickly as an adult that curtains are expensive. Pretty curtains are even more expensive, and pretty blackout curtains are mythical creatures that only exist in legends. If you find curtains you like that get the job done, you probably will not be changing them out any time soon. So what if you want to bring in some different colors? Drape a garland into the mix for an instant makeover, and change the garland out whenever you like.
- In the Kid’s Play Kitchen – As far as kid toys go, play kitchens are one of the most popular toys to customize these days. Little A’s is still in its original state, so when we want to add some classy color to her room, we go for the garland. And that way, even when she’s not playing with it, the garland draped over the kitchen still looks pretty.
- On your Office Wall – Whether you work at home, in a cube farm, or in the corner suite, the office needs to be an inviting space. If you need some inspiration in your office, pick your favorite garland and hang it up on your wall. I’ve found if you hang one up that you used in a party, looking up from your computer and gazing at the garland will instantly take you back to the party. A smile from a genuinely happy memory will take you further through the day than another cup of coffee.
- On your Blanket Ladder – If you have a blanket ladder, you already know how they can chicly transform a room. But you may not have an endless cascade of interchangeable colored blankets to array across the ladder for all occasions. Enter the garland. Avoid the existential blanket crisis and pop the color into the room with a carefully selected garland instead. (If you don’t have a blanket ladder: I get it, but, honestly, they’re pretty hot right now…)
- On the Bookshelf – It’s true: I don’t have enough books to completely fill my bookshelf. But even if I did, I wouldn’t take an entire wall and leave the decoration to book spines. Our bookshelves have all sorts of decorations, curios, unique bookends, etc. As we mentioned when talking about the office, people prefer to be in happy spaces. Transform the book space into a bright space with a garland, and you may find yourself looking at that bookshelf again instead of passing it by.
10. On the Dining Table – This was perhaps my favorite innovationhack! When laying out a table, whether its the main dining table on any given day, or a party table full of food plates, gifts, or supplies, weave a garland into the free spaces. The alternating colors immediately fill the gaps with dazzling contrast and fun. We’ve done this with both the pom pom garlands and the petal garlands, and they both shine. If the garland matches the decor on the walls (or party decorations on a special occasion), it will bring a new layer coordination that immerses inhabitants into the design.
